We have frequent power outages so lights are necessary.. Bought this multipack and gave one to my son, one to my granddaughter and kept two. I always keep flashlights near the light switches.

Edited: These lanterns are great. Read other reviews if you want to know all the details, but they are very lightweight, compact, easy to carry, easy to use, decently built, and give off a good amount of clean white light. The light output can also be adjusted by simply opening and closing the lantern a bit, so you can get just the right amount of light that you want/need.

What I like best though is that you can use BOTH the lantern and flashlight functions AT THE SAME TIME, it really comes in handy when I sometimes go out walking at night. The red flashing lights are great too, they are highly visible and should catch the attention of anyone within I’d say 100 feet, probably more, so if you are like me and can never feel too safe when you’re out at night, especially when crossing the street, it’s a nice feature to have. It can also be used in conjunction with the lantern light, you don’t have to close the lantern to use the flashlight or red flashing lights which have two modes, either a quick steady flash or morse code SOS.

The lanterns have three handles to easily carry them, two that are “folded down” and can be turned upwards to carry the lantern upright, they can also be used to hang the lantern. There is also a handle on the side to hold the lantern in a more horizontal orientation, this is particularly useful when using the flashlight on the top to shine the light forward and not straight up. Each lantern also has a recessed hook on the bottom which you pull out to use, as well as three magnets that allow you to hang them upside down or attach them to something magnetic; it works great when working on your car, you can stick it right to the underside of the hood. The bottom/base of the lantern where the hook and magnets are located easily twists off to access the battery compartment. Trying to describe everything in words makes it seem much more difficult than it really is, suffice it for me to say that these lanterns are really well designed and thought out making them very easy to use.

Okay, now, about the rechargeable batteries…

First, let me be clear that these lanterns require three Double-A, that is 3x AA batteries.

It is true that these lanterns do NOT work with NiMH rechargeable AA batteries(as other reviewers have stated), even if you charge the batteries to a high voltage. I’ve charged AA NiMH rechargeable batteries to over 1.4 volts each, and they still won’t make the lanterns work, at least not with the three brands I’ve used.

However, if you have AAA rechargeable batteries, put them into adapters, AAA to AA adapters(you can buy them here on Amazon if you don’t have any, I did), then use them to power the lanterns, they’ll work, just don’t ask me why, I don’t get it myself.

I don’t think it’s the voltage of the batteries. I’ve run the lanterns on three AAAs (placed into AA adapters) with just 1.1 volts in each battery, and it works great, but three AA batteries charged to 1.4 volts plus won’t work, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the internal resistance, but I checked that too using my battery charger/tester/analyzer, and the readings were similar for both the AA and AAA batteries.

Anyway, I cannot tell you why, it doesn’t make sense to me(I’d actually love it if someone could explain it), but I can tell you that it works, at least for me, with the rechargeable AAA batteries I’ve used, and they’re not Eneloops.

      Cheers

They are a great size and can be either charged or used with batteries. Gives off plenty of light.

I wanted to love this product as it was bright and had so many cool features. The drawback is the shocking rate that it drains down batteries. I’ll just use rechargeable batteries from here on in.

This lantern is similar to the Etekcity model I bought a few years ago for about the same price. They even share some of the same exact plastic parts. Those also take 3 AA batteries. By comparison, the Eveready use what appear to be COB LEDs where the Etekcity uses a cluster of discrete LEDs. The Eveready lantern is twice as bright as the Etekcity, but it exhausts the batteries in 4 hours. It came with Eveready 1100mah AAs and I tested battery life using 2000mah Enloop rechargeables, which are much higher capacity and should last much longer than the Eveready batteries that came with it. At the 2 hour mark the brightness had diminished by 50%, at 3 hours it had diminished to 12% brightness, and at 4 hours it was down to below 10% brightness. By comparison, the Etekcity were still at 40% brightness after 6 hours using the same batteries. Eveready’s claim of 16 hours of runtime is misleading at best. Maybe the Eveready would have stayed lit at below 10% brightness for 16 hours if I had continued my test, but at that light level the lantern is pretty much useless.

Physical attributes: The battery cover screws onto the bottom of the cylinder and feels cheap. I did not drop test it, but I would not suggest dropping it on a hard surface. It was hard to screw the battery cover on squarely as it kept wanting to cross thread. That is still workable, you just have to be careful then installing the cover. Overall it’s not a bad little emergency lantern for the price, just keep lots of extra batteries on hand.

They work pretty well and the batteries last for a good while I just wish that they were a but brighter!

Rule #1, ya get what ya pay for! With that being said these are a pretty good value for the price and are great as emergency lanterns which is what I bought them for.
They will illuminate a 6 foot circle of area effectively when suspended with either the hook or magnet base. The wire feet are ok but don’t count on them in the long term if you use it a lot.
It’s white light and I really don’t get the whole “it’s too bright thing” You can temper the brightness by just not extending the collar all the way out. This in no way compares in output to a dual mantle coleman at full burn… so there.
I’d wrap it in a can cozy, couple of socks or similar items if it goes in the glovebox.
The flashlight function gets points off in my opinion, the most lackluster part of the ensemble. Maybe 10/15 feet at best? why? throw a few more LEDs at it with a focus collar and that would have been awesome.. but noooooo, the red beaconing light is actually brighter than the flashlight function …go figure.
But hey, its got 6 bucks worth of batteries included, all ready set to go?
It’s a deal.. you want something better ..go out and spend the money and you’ll get 1 for probably 3 times the price.
It works and my chickens certify it for late night work in the coop

The plastic feels a little cheap but no issues so far. The lights are bright and the magnets work well to hang in different places. I have one in each vehicle and two in our camp box. Would definitely purchase again.

These little lanterns are awesome. I got the four pack and kept two for myself and gave two to my mom and we have both had the unfortunate opportunities to use them over the last few months with rhe storms that come this time of year. I used one to have light in rhe house and kept the second for backup in case the batteries died in the first. I used it sporadically in rhe evening and then left it on when I went to sleep as power was still out. Power came on at some point during the night but i slept until morning and surprisingly the lantern was still going just as bright. Now I know that’s not a true test of endurance, but for real world practicality it passes the test wirh flying colors in my book. Even if it only made it one night alone, that’s four nights without spare batteries. If you’re in a situation longer than that you likely have bigger problems to contend with. I might use the second one with its fresh batteries and Do a true endurance test on it. If so I’ll come and update this review with the results. I don’t have a lux meter but I can say it’s plenty bright for the largest of rooms if you want these for emergency purposes.
      5/5 stars-would definitely buy again

Because of some problems mentioned in other reviews I tried out all 4 right away (came with 12 batteries).
They all worked as expected: lit up when the telescope casing is lifted and shut off when closed down. It also functions as a flashlight and has a red light flashing mode. They have a hook on the bottom to hang them upside down, as well as a handle to hold them horizontally like a flashlight. The only con is they aren’t as bright as I expected but they would certainly suffice during a power outage which is my main use for them. I can’t speak to durability but they seem like they will withstand normal household usage.
